1. Raw Materials:

1. Sodium Bisulfite (NaHSO₃) solution or Sodium Sulfite (Na₂SO₃)
2. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) gas
3. Sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide (sometimes used)

2. Production Process:

Method 1: From Sodium Bisulfite

1. Sodium bisulfite is heated to remove water, causing it to lose water molecules and convert into sodium metabisulfite.

Chemical reaction:

1. 2NaHSO3→ Na2S2O5+H2O2

Method 2: From Sodium Sulfite and Sulfur Dioxide

1. Sulfur dioxide gas is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium sulfite.

Chemical reaction:

1. Na2 SO3 +SO2 →Na2 S2 O5
2. The resulting sodium metabisulfite precipitates out or is crystallized by evaporating excess water.

3. Crystallization and Drying:

1. After synthesis, the product is cooled to crystallize sodium metabisulfite.
2. The crystals are then filtered and dried to obtain the final powdered product.

4. Packaging:

1. The dry sodium metabisulfite powder is packed in moisture-proof bags or containers to prevent decomposition due to moisture and exposure to air.
