Also known as sodium dithionite, it is a white or yellowish crystalline powder used mainly as a reducing agent in textiles (bleaching), paper, water treatment, and other industries.
1. Raw Materials
- Sodium bisulfite (NaHSO₃)
- Zinc powder or zinc dust
- Water
2. Preparation of Sodium Bisulfite Solution
- Sodium bisulfite solution is prepared by absorbing sulfur dioxide (SO₂) into a sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide solution.
3. Reduction Reaction
- Zinc dust is added to the sodium bisulfite solution.
- The zinc reduces the bisulfite ions (HSO₃⁻) to produce sodium hydrosulfite.

2NaHSO₃+Zn→Na₂S₂O₄+Zn²⁺+H₂O
4. Filtration
