Phosphoric Acid Manufacturing Process – Overview

1. Wet Process (Most Common Method)

The wet process is the predominant method used globally, especially for producing phosphoric acid intended for fertilizer manufacturing.

Process Overview:

• Raw Material: Phosphate rock (usually fluorapatite)
• Reagent: Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄)
• Reaction: Ca₅(PO₄)₃F+5H₂SO₄+10H₂O→3H₃PO₄+5CaSO₄⋅2H₂O+HF
• Steps:
• 1. Grinding and mixing of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid.
• 2. A chemical reaction occurs in a reactor, producing phosphoric acid and gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) as a byproduct.
• 3. Filtration separates the liquid phosphoric acid from the solid gypsum.
• 4. Concentration of the acid to the required strength through evaporation.

Key Features:

• Produces commercial-grade phosphoric acid (typically 28–32% P₂O₅).
• Cost-effective for large-scale production.
• Used primarily in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers like DAP and MAP.

2. Thermal Process (Electric Furnace Process)

This process is used when high-purity or food-grade phosphoric acid is required.

Process Overview:

• Raw Material: Elemental phosphorus (P₄), air and water.
• Reaction:
• 1. Combustion:
• P₄+5O₂→2P₂O₅
• 2. Hydration:
• P₂O₅+3H₂O→2H₃PO₄
• ● Steps:
• 1. Elemental phosphorus is burned in air to form phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅).
• 2. P₂O₅ is then hydrated to produce phosphoric acid.

• Produces very pure phosphoric acid (85–90% concentration).
• Higher production cost due to energy-intensive furnace operation.
